Monday Mixtape Update 04.06.09 :: Hard Rockin’ Daddies

Thin Lizzy

If you’ve been following the mixes for the past couple months, you may be saying to yourself, “Hey, I like all this old sunshine pop and power pop pap as much as the next guy, but isn’t it kinda wimpy? Joel, why don’t you give me some hard rockin’?!” To that I say, “Shahmown an’ bring it. Ahmowna rock youz.” It’s a hard rockin’ mix.

SIDE A

01. Budgie — “Breadfan” Guns ‘n’ Roses lifted this all-time power intro for “Welcome to the Jungle”. It’s a fact; look it up.

02. Bad Brains — “I” Totally punkified.

03. Nirvana — “Floyd the Barber” It was nice for Kurdt Cobain to write a song about his childhood barber, Floyd.

04. Sir Lord Baltimore — “Hell Hound” Hell hounds! Watch out!

05. Mott the Hoople — “Rock and Roll Queen” This record came out in 1969. Just listen to it and groove on that, peoples.

06. Elf — “Prentice Wood” From the band’s last album before it essentially became Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. Yep, that’s the lord of the demon elves himself on lead vocals—Ronnie James Dio.

07. Led Zeppelin — “Sick Again” Yeah that’s right sick again. Some more sick riffs and funky ass drummin’! Killin’ it.

08. Mudhoney — “Flat Out Fucked” It’s a blues that gets right to the point.

09. Scream — “Came Without Warning” Scream was Dave Grohl’s first big gig before joining Nirvana; not sure if he played on this track.

10. Andrew WK — “Long Live the Party” No truer anthem was e’er sung.

11. UFO — “Lights Out” Heavy stuff from Phil and the boys.

12. The Clash — “What’s My Name” Uh, Joe?

13. Sparks — “Nothing to Do” “If I had a million thumbs I’d twiddle, twiddle, but I just have two.” Gets me every time.

14. The Darkness — “English Country Garden” Hey, I stand by this album; it’s still a fun listen every once in a while.

15. King Crimson — “The Great Deceiver” More stupid lyrics and twisted rockin’ from King Crimson. This album marked a definite change from the jazz-rock of the band’s early ’70s records, and kinda presages the wacky shit they’d do in the ’80s.

16. Dust — “All in All” On drums … Marky Ramone!

Jesus Allin

SIDE B

17. Yes — “Beyond and Before” Yes were a more straightforward hard rock band before Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman joined the band. This is from the band’s self-titled 1969 debut album.

18. Girlschool — “Demolition Boys” The Girlschool album covers have always intrigued me. The music? Eh, not so much. But hey, it rocks, don’t it?!

19. The Dicks — “Bourgeois Fascist Pigs” Gee, someone’s a might bit angry, huh?

20. The Embarrassment — “Sex Drive” A straight-up classic from the band that Robert Christgau called the “great lost American band.” And they were from Wichita of all places!

21. GG Allin and the Jabbers — “Gimme Some Head” The other great lost American band—GG Allin and his Jabbers!

22. The Dictators — “What It Is” What it is dat dere?

23. Mötley Crüe — “Sumthin’ for Nuthin’” Hangin’ with the Crüe here on PDD!

24. Blue Öyster Cult — “Dominance and Submission” Bow down, spitches.

25. The Stooges — “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell” Well isn’t that sweet …

26. Warhammer 48K — “Citizen Pain” Two straight weeks of Warhammer.

27. Dungen — “Bortglömd” I’m glad I worked a few umlauts into this hard rockin’ mix.

28. Misfits — “20 Eyes” This song is about those booths you’d see as a kid where you put your hand in a covered box and there would be a bowl of eyeballs but really the eyeballs were peeled grapes.

29. Buzzcocks — “Autonomy” The ‘Cocks’ hardest rockin’ song, in my humble opinion.

30. Thin Lizzy — “Massacre” So goooood them geetars.

31. …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead — “A Perfect Teenhood” When me and the MSO boys hung with Trail of Dead back in the day, we begged them to change their name to “…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dudes”. They didn’t listen. And see where it got them? That’s what happens. That’s what happens when you don’t listen.

32. Dragonforce — “Reasons to Live” Uuhhh … yes.
