Monday Mixtape Update 10.12.09 :: Club Sweat

Paradise Garage

It’s funny; the last place you’d see me these days is in any sort of dance club or partying down-oriented establishment. I’m just not feeling it, jack. I’ve got bigger fish to fry. There’s just no time for grooving to the music, the shaking of tail feathers, the cutting of rugs, the hopping of socks, or performing the hand jive, the watusi, the hully gully, the Barnaby Bump, the Carlton Bop, the Curly Shuffle, the cha-cha slide or the cabbage patch prance.

But I have been really itching for a dance mix to “bump” at work. Something I can really jive my type to. So I’ve assembled what’s probably the best dance mix you’ve heard since my “TURN UP THEM WOOFS TURN UP THEM TWEETS” mix (posted almost a year to the day!). Here’s 26 bouncers to get you through the week; I even made a couple exclusive remixes for the set. Spread the word …

Read on for link and track list …

Kid Creole and Cristina Monet

01. Better the Devil You Know / Kylie Minogue Kylie Minogue kicked off her first ever North American tour here in Oakland. That’s pretty cool.

02. Subculture / New Order It would’ve been strange to hear Ian Curtis doing this stuff, no?

03. King Of Wishful Thinking / Go West This jam is the reason I watch the first 5 minutes of Pretty Woman whenever it’s on TBS.

04. Harder Better Faster Stronger / Daft Punk

05. Wipe That Sound / Mouse On Mars It’s a pretty obvious one at this point, but that’s what you need to loosen up the wallflowers.

06. Let’s All Chant / Michael Zager Band Where has this song been hiding from me??

07. I’m An Indian, Too / Don Armando Who would’ve thought a hard disco version of one of the stupidest, most annoying, racist songs ever written and performed for the stage was such a fantastic idea?

08. There But for the Grace of God Go I / Machine Machine was August Darnell’s short-lived project that took up the space between his work fronting Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

09. Blame It On Disco / Cristina Cristina was a pet project of the aforementioned Darnell; he produced her first record for Ze, a sort of post-modern celebration/comment on disco debauchery. I think I’ve said it before, but seek her stuff out if you can.

10. Go Bang / Dinosaur L Dinosaur L was a disco group created by experimental singer/composer Arthur Russell; it definitely betrays his art-jazz leanings while keeping a heavy thump funk.

11. Doctor Faustu’s (Extended Mix) / Cyber People Italo-space-disco at its bubblegummiest.

12. Gloria / Laura Branigan Branigan’s take on Umberto Tozzi’s 1979 European hit.

13. Freedom (Long Mix) / Wham! Can’t get enough of this!

Boney M

14. Cool It Now / New Edition I don’t know about you, but I think that New Edition really lost something when Bobby Brown left the group …

15. When I Hear Music (12″ Mix) / Debbie Deb I heard this on the classic R&B/dance station in Tucson just about every week.

16. Buffalo Gals / Malcolm McLaren Ol’ Malcolm McLaren had a few good idears in his day. His 1982 debut album Duck Rock, which contained this weird hit single, was one.

17. Hey Mami / Fannypack Does anyone ever really think about Fannypack? I mean, what ever happened to them?? Right?!?

18. D.A.N.C.E. / Justice I don’t know about ya’ll, but this song makes me want to dance!

19. I’ll Be By Your Side / Sally Shapiro Sally plays mid-’80s-era Italo-disco via Sweden in the 2000s.

20. Heartbeat / Annie Another totez obvs pick, but hey, everyone except me and apparently the editors at Pitchfork forgot about this one a couple years ago. Still lovin’ it.

21. Go Insane (Extended Remix) / Lindsey Buckingham Blues, pop, country, new wave, production work, dance … the Buckingham has had his finger in many a pie. Hey, stop thinkin’ dirty you creeps!

22. Heart of Gold/Have You Ever Seen the Rain (PDD GOLDEN OLDIES MIX) / Boney M It’s a two-fer!

23. Best of My Love / The Emotions I always associate this song with B-Rock and The Bizz’s “My Baby Daddy”. Maybe because of the lazy, super-obvious sample …

24. I Am The City / ABBA This song, along with a handful of others, was recorded after ABBA’s final album, The Visitors, then scrapped; it was only made available in the ’90s on the More ABBA Gold album. It’s also fantastic, and I really really wish they would’ve done one more album …

25. The Number One Song In Heaven / Sparks Sparks played this one when we saw them in LA!!

26. A Little Fairytale (PDD MASTER/PUPIL MIX) / Erasure vs. Magnetic Fields MASTER TEACHES PUPIL!

Dude. I love “King of Wishful Thinking.” I rediscovered it about 6 months ago and I couldn’t stop listening to it. I was thinking of making a mixtape based around songs from when I was younger that I rediscover and become obsessed with based on how much I love that song.
I also thought of a movie about a serial killer who listens to that song after each kill to calm himself down.
    Great minds think alike.

“KOWT” is a jam … and your serial killer idea sounds funny. i think kevin costner is looking for ideas for the mr. brooks prequel …

A lot of classic cuts - I’m partial to the New Edition and Debbie Deb, myself. Oh, and Annie has some good new stuff out - check out “Anthonio” - it’s very italo-disco.
