Monday Mixtape Update 11.23.09 :: Electrolovers

Neon Indian

Sorry so tardy! Today’s mix comes from my brother Jack over at killerpop.com. Check it ooooooout. Peaze

My initial concept when putting together this mix was that electronic music, which can easily be generalized as cold, calculated and mechanical, can sometimes evoke very human emotions, be it through melody, lyrican content or something less tangible. I set out to look for a collection of warm ‘n’ fuzzy electro-jamz that, for one reason or another, tug on the listener’s heartstrings. I also wanted to limit myself to songs from the past few years, because I like putting superfluous limits on these kinds of things. The result was this little list here, which is a nice mix to put on when you are trying to seduce a robot.

Read on for link and track list …

01. 薔薇と彼女の王子 / HeartsRevolution This song is cute. It’s a nice little warm up into the real meat ‘n’ bones of this mix.

02. Watch Your Step / Juvelen This guy listens to a lot of Prince. Can you tell? The opening synthesizer line here is brilliant. Also, Juvelen is Swedish artist #1 on this playlist - shall we count the Swedes?

03. What’s On Your Mind? / Lo-Fi-Fnk They seem to have lost all of their vowels, but they certainly haven’t misplaced their youthful angst. They’re Swedish, too.

04. I’m Not Alone / Calvin Harris Starts off as mopey British rock, but soon delves into some over-the-top rave catharsis.

05. Strobe / Friendly Fires Some more pretty, lovelorn jams.

06. Tune Into My Heart / Little Boots In a lot of ways I view Little Boots’ debut album as a sequel to Kylie Minogue’s X. In that analogy, I guess this would be Little Boots’ response to Kylie’s “The One.”

07. Can You Discover? / Discovery Discovery consists of one member of Vampire Weekend and one member of Ra Ra Riot. In fact, this same song is on Ra Ra Riot’s LP in a more traditional, guitar based format (”Can You Tell”) - but I think it sounds better here.

08. Animal / Miike Snow This song is a little less “electric” than some of Miike Snow’s other numbers, but I like the shameless cribbing of Peter Gabriel. Is it a coincidence that this song features the line “in your eyes?” Can’t really get too into a lot of their stuff, but this one keeps me coming back.

09. Sunset Blvd. / Pacific! Another Swedish group, and another song that’s just barely hanging on to the “electro” theme, but it fit the “lover” bit too well for me to pass it up. A little bit of yacht rock, a dash of Beach Boys and ELO, and some glittery synth lines make this a winner.

10. I Can’t Tell You Why / Chromeo Now is probably a good time Chromeo’s heartfelt cover of The Eagles, “I Can’t Tell You Why.”

11. Vision One / Royksopp This song has a haunting vocal melody and an addictively squelchy synth line, and features lyrics about how “we’ve already evolved into machines in our minds.” Might not sound that romantic, unless you fantasize about transhumanism and the singularity and such, in which case it kind of is. Oh, and they’re not Swedish - they’re Norwegian.

12. 3am / Kleerup I love Kleerup’s pounding, emotive instrumental tracks, but even better are the tracks where he drags in some Swedish girl (oh yeah, he’s Swedish) to lend some vocals. These songs always cross the fine white line between corny and brilliant, by going all-in with wholehearted sincerity and enthusiasm. Also, italo disco fans may recognize that this beat is essentially just a sped-up version of “Felicita.”

13. Villanova Sunset / Pacific! I am of the opinion that you can have two songs by the same artist in a mix. No more than two, but two is acceptable. If you weren’t convinced that “Sunset Blvd.” belonged here, these beeps and boops should make up for it. There’s a nice sort of triumphant happiness about this track. Swedish.

14. Mind Drips / Neon Indian The proper term is “Neon Native American“.

15. When The Night / Annie This is the best song on Annie’s Don’t Stop. You don’t think so? You’re wrong. It feels like an early ’90s soft rock radio tune, in the best possible way. Annie is also not Swedish - Norwegian again. Nice try.

16. Digital Suicide / HeartsRevolution Two songs rule! Especially appropriate if said two songs are used as “bookends.” It’s funny that I threw two HeartsRevolution tracks in a lovey-dovey mix, when the majority of their music consists of a lot more screaming and loud noises. I just think they are at their strongest when writing cute, wistful tunes like this.

Woah. This has nothing to do with the mix (which is great). It just weirded me out. “Neon Indian” is the temporary name I gave to a video project I am working on because it features lots of colors and an injun dancin around. I was thinking of writing a song for it called “Neon Indian” because I thought it sounded like a cool title. Well, once again, I’ve thought up something cool that already exists. Guess I won’t be calling it that now.
