Monday Mixtape Update 02.01.10 :: Places

February 1st, 2010 · 9 Comments

Was a time I oft fantasied of traveling to far away places and learning the ways and customs of exotic peoples. Like most youthful fantasies, this desire was at some point replaced with the ever more pressing urge to just make it through the goddamn day. But I can still travel to these magical places! Yes yes, with the help of music (and crippler hits)! I’ve assembled this week a mix of songs about places. Always a rich topic for a songwriter to explore; whether they’re getting the cuss out of Dodge or partyin’ it up in the streets. Sail away — in your mind!

01. Memphis Egypt / The Mekons These boys startin’ the mix off right. In Memphis, Egypt you can see those pyramids!

02. Armenia City In The Sky / The Who A magical place hidden away somewhere in the sky. Only those of a pure heart can wish their way to Armenia …

03. Santa Rosa / ABBA Straight up baroque pop, an (unreleased outtake/B-side?) from the Ring Ring reissue.

04. Big Sur / Beach Boys Hey here’s the good version of “Big Sur” from the unreleased but much-bootlegged Landlocked album.

05. London, London / Caetano Veloso As depicts Veloso’s early ’70s exile in Britannia.

06. Penny Lane / The Beatles I love finger pies!

07. Tampa, Florida / Peter Cowap It’s funny that Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman thought a song about one of the shittiest destinations in the US would be worthy of a novelty tune. Love how Cowap not-quite-successfully fakes a Southern accent. From the excellent Strawberry Bubblegum compilation of Stewart’s and Gouldman’s work for Strawberry Studios just before their formation of 10cc.

08. Stuck In Chicago / Syl Johnson Ain’t that a bitch. O’Hare is a trap.

09. Chinatown / The Move Yeah, you can definitely find yourself a “good time girl” in Chinatown SF, if you know what I mean!

10. Something About England / The Clash What is it? What is it about England?

11. Atlantis Town / Rockets I think the Rockets may actually have gone to Atlantis …

12. Destiny Street / Richard Hell & The Voidoids Located right between Circumstance Avenue and Happenstance Lane …

13. Going Down To Liverpool / The Bangles A jangly cover of the Katrina and the Waves original tune.

14. Hey Now (Motor City) / The Vandalias This band really made every song epic, huh?

15. America / Gianna Nannini So fucken right. I want you Gianna.

16. Motorway To Roswell / Pixies Well if there’s a motorway straight to there why hasn’t anyone figured it out?

17. 53rd & 3rd / Ramones The saddest story …

18. Sausalito (Is the Place to Go) / Ohio Express Another Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman secret hit from the Strawberry Bubblegum comp.

19. South Australia / The Pogues Sounds like a party, right? Well trust me, South Australia is no party.

20. California Dreaming / Lee Moses I don’t really even like this song that much, why is it ending up on all these mixes?

21. Mount Zion / Desmond Dekker Jah will lead us there.

22. Government Center / The Modern Lovers Government centers are rarely this awesome. I’m dubious, Jonathan.

23. Memphis, Tennessee / Chuck Berry God Chuck Berry is so great.

24. Atlanta Song / David Allan Coe Hey, so is David Allan Coe!

25. Oklahoma U.S.A. / The Kinks

26. Dayton, Ohio 1903 / Harry Nilsson

Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect
against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any tips?
