Totally Unnecessary: Two products that don’t need viral marketing

Viral marketing — another sign of the Idiocracy-ization of our country. Sure, fanboys just ate up those mysterious links to photos of Heath Ledger as the Joker; but what was the point of those leaked pictures of the Joker and his Country Plush Bears Collection? And we all laughed at the Boston Police Department for wasting millions hunting down harmless Lite-Brite Aqua Teen Hunger Force promotional materials hidden by fans. But the laughter died when Perdue Family Farms encouraged fans to hide promotional bags of raw chicken gizzards in retirement communities around the country.

I think the problem is that certain products just don’t need viral marketing. Take two of the most annoying, unnecessary viral marketing campaigns I’ve seen recently, for Butterfinger and Nikon’s CoolPix Camera …

The Butterfinger Comedy Network on Yahoo! is fighting to be the site to go to for videos of wacky pranks, groin-punches and three-wheeler accidents. That is, right after Ebaums World, College Humor, Daily Ha Ha, Youtube, Myspace Video, Funny Junk, Funny Videos UK, BoFunk, Funny Hub, and um, well, you get the idea. Do we really need another video site to go to for videos of wacky pranks, groin-punches and three-wheeler accidents? Does Nestlé really expect Butterfinger to become the definitive name in videos of wacky pranks, groin-punches and three-wheeler accidents? The real problem is I’ve seen a lot of these videos I’ve seen elsewhere, or they’re just recycled bits of TV shows like Best Week Ever that I wouldn’t want to watch anyway.

I don’t even think Butterfinger is qualified to be the funniest candy bar. Right now the B-finger’s only claim to fame is making The Simpsons seem lame years before the show actually became lame. Charleston Chew, Whatchamacallit, Zagnuts? Zing!! Now there’s some funny candy bars. In fact, after posting this I plan on buying the domain zagnutszingers.biz and changing the face of candy bar-related Internet comedy forever.

Did it make me want to eat a Butterfinger: Well, yeah, I mean, those things are tasty.

Nikon CoolPix Camera | Ashton’s CoolPix

For anyone who’s seen the terminally unfunny commercials and just couldn’t get enough of Ashton Kutcher’s smarmy, bescarfed mugging, fear not — there’s a whole website devoted to them! Ashton’s Coolpix is a site meant to promote Nikon’s CoolPix camera. It features a service that e-mails a photo of your choosing to a friend along with a quirky, personalized video of Ashton Kutcher getting all pouty when he sees your picture on his camera. I love it when he acts all pissed but you know he doesn’t really mean it!

So I decided to test out the site and to see if it made me want to buy a CoolPix camera. First off, I uploaded the following photo of dogs dressed as hot dogs:

Once your picture is uploaded, the menu asks you to select a category for your image; the choices included “Kegger,” “Dudes,” “Frat,” “Total Tool,” “Morning After,” “Oh No You Didn’t,” “On the Down Low” and “Up In Your Grill.” None of these seemed to fit my picture, so after some pained deliberation, I labelled my pic as “Up In Your Grill” and waited for the magic to happen. All of a sudden Ashton appeared on my screen holding his CoolPix camera, which was displaying the photo I had uploaded of dogs dressed as hot dogs. Ashton, mustering all of the smart-alecky charm that we loved in hit movies such as The Butterfly Effect and The Guardian, looked right at the screen and said — get this:

“Your truck called — it wants its grill back!”

Oh man, that is soo Ashton. I bet that’s what he’d really say if someone sent him a picture of dogs dressed as hot dogs that was labelled “Up In Your Grill.” I can’t wait to try this out on all my friends.

Did it make me want a Nikon CoolPix: Hell no, but strangely Ashton’s CoolPix made me want to dump on some Axe Body Spray and read back issues of Us Magazine.
